Day 3 Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today marks the highly anticipated moment as you prepare for an extraordinary encounter with one of Bwindi's majestic inhabitants: the endangered mountain gorilla.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest stands as a unique sanctuary, home to both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, distinguishing it as the sole forest in Africa with such a remarkable distinction. Within its lush embrace reside an array of biodiversity, including five other primate species, 113 mammal species, over 200 butterfly species, and a dazzling array of 360 bird species.

The gorillas you'll track belong to one of nine habituated family groups, accustomed to human presence for a limited duration each day. The duration of your tracking experience can range from as brief as 2 hours to as extensive as 7 hours. Once the gorillas are located, your group will be granted a precious hour to observe and cherish this awe-inspiring encounter. Confronting a mountain gorilla up close is an immensely humbling and emotionally stirring experience, akin to stepping into the pages of Uganda's own 'Gorillas in the Mist'.

After this unforgettable experience, return to the lodge this afternoon to unwind amidst the serene beauty of the surroundings.

Good to know

Mountain gorilla sightings cannot be 100% guaranteed since these are wild animals and therefore unpredictable. The good news is the success rate for viewing them is typically over 90%. Visitors are permitted an hour with the gorillas once they are spotted. It's necessary to stay overnight in Bwindi the night before trekking due to the early morning start. Since trekking can sometimes last a full day, it's highly recommended to book accommodation for a second night as well. Ideally, staying for 2 to 3 nights allows for a better experience of the region. The timing and conditions of gorilla tracking vary significantly as the gorillas constantly move through the rainforest. It's important to be prepared and remember that weather conditions can change suddenly. The terrain is often steep and lacks marked paths. Gorilla tracking can be extremely strenuous. It might last just a couple of hours, but it could also extend to a full day of hiking, lasting up to 8 hours or more, especially in hot, high-altitude conditions. It's essential to be physically fit and discuss any concerns about your ability to cope with the trek before arriving in Uganda so that suitable arrangements can be made for you
